The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS)

Undergraduate Teaching

 

The department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery teaches undergraduate students in the clinical years.

The department of OMS offers 3 major courses: 

  • 1. Pain control and local anesthesia- 4th year
  • 2. Applied head and neck anatomy- 4th year
  • 3. Oral & maxillofacial surgery- 5th and 6th years.

The syllabus of the courses is found in the "Information Book" of the School of Dental Medicine.

 

 Pain control and local anesthesia - 4th year: The curriculum focuses on:

  • 1. The pathophysiology of pain related to dental medicine.
  • 2. Pain- treatment options.
  • 3. Analgesics pharmacology.
  • 4. Methods of local anesthesia related to dental medicine.
  • 5. Treatments methods in case of failures or complications.

 

Applied head & neck anatomy- 4th year: The curriculum focuses on:

1. Basic anatomy of the head and neck.

2. Applied anatomy related to OMS.

3. The functional physiology of the oral maxillofacial system.

4. Radiological anatomy.

 

 

Oral & maxillofacial surgery- 5th and 6th years

      1. Applied anatomy related to OMS.

        2. Patient systemic evaluation before treatment.

        3. Physical examination related to OMS.

        4. The surgical approach to head and neck pathology.

        5. Wound repair process.

        6. Exodontia and minor oral surgery.

        7. Dento-alveolar infections and their treatment.

        8. Treatment of dento- alveolar and facial trauma.

        9.  Treatment of maxillary sinus disease.

        10. Treatment of salivary glands disease.

        11. Treatment of benign and malignant head and neck pathology.

        11. Head and neck reconstructve surgery.

        12. Orthognatic surgery.

       13. Treatment of the temporomandibular joint.

       14. Dental implantology.

       15. Treatment of surgical complications.

 

 

In addition to the 3 courses, the undergraduate students participate in the following Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics, which provides special clinical training in those areas.

  1. The dental school OMS clinic.
  2. The OMS clinics of Sheba Medical Center and Rabin Medical Center
